John's Atomic Sangria

This is a modification of the original "Ancient Chinese Secret" recipe.  It basically adds a half cup of rum into the mix.  The first modification to the original recipe called for a full cup of rum which made this drink WAY too strong (and made it taste like doing a shot of rum), which got it the nickname of "Nuclear Sangria".  By cutting the rum down to 1/2 cup, it went from "Nuclear" to "Atomic" - it still packs a wallop, but in a much more controlled manner.  The sugar also got cut in half to not send everyone into a drunken diabetic shock.

This makes one pitcher's worth.  Ya might want to double it.

  • 1/2 cup white rum
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 750 ml bottle of red wine - a simple pinot noir will do
  • 2 limes, 2 lemons, 2 oranges - You're going to be juicing these, so you can get away with bottled juice if you HAVE to, but it'll be a lot better if you squeeze fresh.
  • 1 large apple
  • 1 liter of Fresca

The night before serving:
Cut the apple into bite-sized cubes and soak them in the 1/2 cup of rum overnight.

Before serving:
Boil 1/4 cup of water and use it to dissolve the sugar so it's not all gritty.
Add the wine.
Juice and add the citrus fruits.
Add the apples and the rum.

JUST before serving:
Add the Fresca just before serving so it still has a bit of carbonation.

Upon serving:
Dance all night.
